Biography

Meet the band

Saboroso was originally conceived in the Fall of 2004 by group founder, John Driscoll. Inspiration for the group came from John's trip to Rio de Janeiro earlier that year where he experienced the power of Samba, beauty of Pagode and the fascinating culture of Brazil, first hand. It took over a year of auditions before the Saboroso line up stabilized and the unique instrumentation and final line up of the group came together. Today the members bring backgrounds that range from jazz, funk, R&B, and includes extensive world music experience such as Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, African and even Taiko.

Driscoll first called on long time friend and music collaborator; Kelly Mella to front the band as lead vocalist. Next the jazz stlyin' guitar work of Bob Beaverson was folded into the mix. Bryan Elliott on saxophone came shortly thereafter as well as Matt Olson on bass and guitar, Bruce Root and Mike Fienen on percussion and finally John's wife Mary on flute.

The music this group brings you is beautiful and powerful with centuries of development behind it. The members approach this music with humility and respect. The music they are playing comes to us from the unique musical and cultural experience that is Brazil. Their wish is to scratch the surface of this music for you and hopefully intrigue you in a way that that inspired them.

Saboroso is currently working on their first, full length CD due out in early Spring of 2008. You can catch them in and around Madison at night clubs, coffee houses, festivals and more. The group is open to community service events so please don't hesitate to contact them.
